When Bette was flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., for the Kennedy Center Honors tribute, Lucille Ball, who was being similarly honored, was on the same plane. Robert Osborne, columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, was Bette’s companion on the trip. As he and Bette boarded the plane, they passed by Lucy, Angela Lansbury, Diahann Carroll, Vic Damone, and a few other luminaries. Bette got on and said, “Well, if this plane crashes, I wonder who is going to get top billing?” And Lucille Ball said, “Bette, it’d be you. No question, it’d be you!”
