meditateonthis said: I LOVE Sense and Sensibility!

It’s an amazing, amazing book.  I actually love all of Austen’s book except Pride and Prejudice.  There were too many characters and I found most of them to be pretentious or obnoxious.  But I know most Austen’s fans love it the most.

so Charlotte Bronte read Emma by Jane Austen and was really interested in this minor character named Jane Fairfax who was poor and would have been a governess had she not married well and then Bronte wrote her own novel exploring the plight of the poor governess who married this guy named Edward Fairfax Rochester in a novel called Jane Eyre and my point is don’t let anyone tell you shit about fanfiction.

““I think Austen was a visionary. I think her female characters are so bright and witty, the themes are brilliant and the men are so sexy in Austen as well – but no man has ever fallen in love with an Austen woman because she is pretty or beautiful or because she has long blonde hair. They fall in love with them because of who they are, because of their vibrancy and intelligence. If only we taught that a little more in our schools.”

— Anna Maxwell Martin (Elizabeth Bennet in 2013 BBC Death Comes to Pemberley)

And I would also like to add that Jane Bennet, even though she was considered to be a real beauty, was mostly described as ‘too nice’ and shy, which resulted in people (her love interest amongst others) thinking that she’s not interested enough.

Jane Austen critizised society’s shallow perception of beauty and wealth and that being pretty doesn’t automatically mean you are flawless and that being rich doesn’t mean you lead an easy life (Mr. Darcy).

And that was JUST Pride and Prejudice.

Don’t let me get started on how she openly critizised women’s inability to inherit fortune (Sense and Sensibility).

Believe me, JA novels are character studies, with a bit of romance, not the other way around.

Fill in the blank

I am sometimes afraid to admit that I don’t like BLANK. I don’t hate it, or dislike people who like it, I’m just not into BLANK.

I’ll start…

Classic literature.

Pride and Prejudice. Its my least favorite Austen novel and none of the move adaptations moved me. There are probably a million more things I could say but this was the first that came to mind. Probably because I love all the other Jane Austen novels so much and that seemed to be the most loved.
